VMS BACKUP tape recovery and backup restore services

VMS BACKUP:

VMS was a famously reliable enterprise-level server operating system developed by the now defunct Digital Equipmant Corporation. Its bundled data archival backup program was imaginatively (but memorably) called BACKUP, and produced savesets (with the *.BCK file extension) either to disk or to tape. VMS evolved into POSIX-compliant OpenVMS but retained the same BACKUP utility.

VMS BACKUP is probably the most robust backup format ever commercially released. It features multiple CRC fields and user-controllable XOR blocks that allow the software to recover all file data and meta-data even when a block is lost.
